Preparing for Surgery

The healthier you are going into surgery, the smoother and faster your recovery. Here is what genuinely makes a difference, in the weeks before your operation.

General Principles

As a general rule, the healthier you are before surgery, the quicker and more comfortable your recovery will be. Sensible eating, staying well hydrated and regular gentle exercise in the weeks before surgery all help. It is worth avoiding major surgery at a time when life is already complex, or immediately before a significant event such as a wedding — recovery needs space.

Smoking & Nicotine

Nicotine causes vasoconstriction, which significantly increases the risk of wound breakdown, skin necrosis, poor scarring and infection — this includes cigarettes, vaping, nicotine patches and gum. A minimum of six weeks nicotine-free before and after surgery is required for most procedures; for some, such as facelift surgery, active smoking is an absolute contraindication. Stopping completely is strongly advised, and support is available if you would like help doing so.

Alcohol

Alcohol impairs platelet function and increases bleeding risk, interacts with anaesthetic agents, and impairs wound healing by reducing collagen synthesis and immune function. Abstain completely for at least two weeks before and two weeks after surgery.

GLP-1 Medications (Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy)

GLP-1 agonists slow gastric emptying, which carries an aspiration risk under general anaesthesia. Weekly injections should be stopped at least one week before surgery, daily formulations 24 hours before. Always declare any GLP-1 medication at your pre-assessment appointment.

Medication & Health Review

Bring a full list of your regular medications, supplements and any known allergies to your consultation. Some medications (particularly blood thinners) need to be paused or adjusted before surgery, always under guidance from the prescribing clinician. Any significant change in your health since your consultation should be flagged before your surgery date.

Practical Preparation

It is natural to research online before surgery, but alongside much accurate information there is a good deal that is unreliable or misleading. Bring any questions to your consultation, where they can be answered directly.

Mental Preparation

Take time to be confident in your decision and realistic about the expected outcome — this is discussed openly at consultation. There is no pressure to proceed, and you are welcome to take as much time as you need before booking.
