C-Section Scar

Revision of an existing C-section scar, or specialist scar-optimising closure performed at the time of your Caesarean section, at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital.

Two Ways Mr Naparus Can Help

There are two distinct ways in which Mr Naparus is involved in C-section scars: revising an existing scar that has already healed poorly, or performing specialist wound closure at the time of a planned C-section itself, to give the scar the best possible start.

C-Section Scar Revision

The "overhang" or "shelf" that some women notice above a C-section scar results from adhesion of the scar to deeper structures beneath it. Mr Naparus performs C-section scar excision and revision, releasing this adhesion and improving both the appearance of the scar and the contour of the tissue overhanging it. This is a highly targeted procedure that can be performed alone, under local anaesthetic or sedation as a day case, or combined with a mini-abdominoplasty where more general abdominal skin and muscle laxity is also present.

Scar-Optimising Closure at the Time of Your C-Section

If requested in advance, Mr Naparus can attend your planned Caesarean section at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital to perform a specialist, scar-optimising wound closure at the time of the operation itself, working alongside your obstetric team. Meticulous, layered closure technique at the time of the original surgery is one of the strongest factors in how a scar ultimately looks, and this option allows patients who are particularly concerned about their eventual scar to plan for the best possible outcome from the outset, rather than needing a separate revision procedure later.

How This Works

This requires advance planning with both your obstetric team and Mr Naparus's practice, as it involves coordinating with your existing maternity care at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. If this is of interest, raise it as early as possible in your pregnancy so it can be arranged in good time before your planned delivery date.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

The Procedure

C-section scar revision is typically performed as a day case under local anaesthetic or sedation, excising the old scar, releasing any adhesion to the underlying fascia, and closing in layers with fine, meticulous technique. Scar-optimising closure at the time of a C-section is performed as part of your existing Caesarean section under the anaesthetic already being used for your delivery, with Mr Naparus undertaking the skin and soft tissue closure once your obstetric team has completed the delivery itself.

Recovery

Recovery for scar revision alone is generally quicker and more comfortable than the original C-section, with most patients returning to light activity within a week or two. Where scar-optimising closure is performed at the time of your C-section, your overall recovery follows the normal course of recovery from a Caesarean section, with attention to scar care as it heals — see Scar Management for general guidance.

Risks

Scarring

A new scar is created with revision; incisions are placed to follow the existing scar line where possible.

Recurrence of Shelf

Uncommon following adequate release, but adhesion can occasionally reform.

Infection

As with any surgical wound; reduced by meticulous technique and good wound care.

Altered Sensation

Numbness or altered sensation near the scar is common and usually improves gradually.
